4 Steps to Using the Right Roller on Whiteboard Paint

Step 1
Whiteboard paint should be applied with a nap or 3/8" nap microfiber roller.

Step 2
Never use a foam or other synthetic roller.

Step 3
A full size 9" roller should be used, not the little mini rollers.

Step 4
Delint the roller by wrapping masking tape around it, spiraling it from top to bottom, covering the entire roller sleeve. Once all covered in tape, unroll the tape from the roller sleeve, removing any excess lint as you go. This step must be complete before mixing the two parts.

3 Things You Need to be Aware of When Applying Whiteboard Paint

Humidity
Relative humidity needs to be less than 50 percent.

Room Temperature
Your ambient room temperature should be between 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dust
Avoid foot traffic in the area or activities that create dust during or post application.

Things To Remember After Applying Whiteboard Paint

Warranty
With proper maintenance and normal wear and tear, whiteboard paint retains its dry-erase ability for 10+ years indoors before you ever need to recoat the surface. It's guaranteed not to crack, peel, stain, yellow or fade with proper use and maintenance.

Maintenance
It works best with low odor dry-erase markers. Erase it with a micro-fiber cloth. To accelerate or enhance the cleaning process, use the specified, ECO-Friendly Cleaner. Spritz a small amount on the area to be cleaned and wipe with a Cleaning Mitt or other micro-fiber cloth. Then wipe with a towel saturated with water to remove any residue. Using a paper towel, dry the surface and you're ready to write.

Recoating
With proper preparation of the surface, we recommend applying one coat for best results. If you choose to use a second coat, be sure to wait until the first coat is dry to touch (about 18-24 hours).  The second coat should be applied at 18- 24 hours to avoid having to sand the surface.  If you need to recoat the surface after the 18-24 hour mark, wait a full 48 hours minimum, then sand with 220 grit sandpaper.  Apply another coat after the sanded surface is dust free, clean and dry.

Health and Safety
Whiteboard paint contains less than 50g/l VOCs. That means that it emits nearly zero harmful chemicals into the environment. It is also free of lead and asbestos. During application, the use of a respirator is recommended.

Application Tips for Whiteboard Paint

1. Follow the directions.
Use the specific type of roller and other tools they suggest. Give enough drying time between coats. Don't write on the wall until they say it is safe to. It will be torture to wait, but try to be patient.

2. Prepare the surface properly.
Make sure the surface is smooth and painted with the recommended base coat. Make sure the base coat has been dry at least 24 hours before applying the dry erase coating.

3. Check the expiration date.
Each kit has an expiration date. If the paint is expired, it won't work like its supposed to, and you may have a problem erasing. Make sure you check the date before you open the product and be prepared to exchange it if it's out of code.

Whiteboard Paint 101

Curious about whiteboard paint? Here are (almost) everything you need to know about it.

What is it?

Whiteboard paint is actually a coating, which is a 2-part formula mix, that when mixed and applied in a proper way will change almost any kind of wall or surface into a dry erase board like surface. It is a superb alternative to traditional whiteboards, which can be huge, bulky, and really pricey. The benefits to choosing the coating are blending your dry erase surface into your environment, utilizing wall and table or desk space, as well as affordability for huge, expansive| dry erase board space. White board paint is likewise referred to as dry erase paint, dry erase board paint, and marker board paint (we like to change it up and use any and all of these terms).

How is Whiteboard Paint Different from Regular Paint?

It is a 2-component product
Regular paint is a single component while dry erase paint is a two-component product. Part A and Part B need to be mixed together delicately per instructions.

It Should not be shaken
Regular paint can be shaken while dry erase paint must not be shaken or blended together with a squirrel mixer. Avoid whipping air right into it as that results in bubbling.

Apply less pressure
Compared to regular paint that needs pressure when being applied so as to spread it further, dry erase coating needs only little pressure with the roller to allow the coating to sit on the surface while avoiding drips and runs.

Do not cut in first
Always cut in as you go, keeping a wet edge.

Avoid excessive backrolling
With regular paint, you can backroll (re-rolling over what's just to kind of even things out). With whiteboard paint, back rolling must be kept to a minimum. Do not overwork the product.

It has a pot life
With regular paint, it will not make a significant difference if you leave the paint tray and step away a couple of minutes. With dry erase coatings, you must start application as soon as the two parts are combined, and then complete the wall within the 40-minute pot life.

Maintaining Your White Boards Wall

  • Clean Your Wall

To avoid marker buildup on your whiteboard, periodically clean it with soy-based cleaner, followed by water dampened cloth or towel. Don't use harsh solvents or cleaners and rough pads or steel wool.

  • Change Your Markers

Low-Odor Dry Erase Markers are recommended. Replace them every 4-6 month even if they're still functioning well.
